Every dream has a beginning.
Before there was Rays Realty Group, before the brokerage, before the growing portfolio of properties, there was simply a man with a dream. Koty Ray always envisioned a life filled with love, a home filled with laughter, a large family gathered around the dinner table, and something meaningful to leave behind. He wanted more than a successful career. He wanted purpose. He wanted to build something of his own, create generational wealth, and make a difference in the lives of the people around him. But like most dreams worth chasing, his didn't happen overnight.
A Dream That Started Small
After graduating college with a degree in business, Koty began his professional journey in Roanoke, Alabama, working in the Retail industry. It was a beginning, but he knew there was more he wanted to accomplish. He eventually moved to Birmingham, where he worked in retail while continuing his education online. When the school he had been attending lost its accreditation, he faced an unexpected setback and had to start over. It was a frustrating chapter, but it taught him something that would follow him throughout his life: sometimes the road to your destination looks nothing like the road you planned.
Koty kept going.
He found his way into real estate as a leasing consultant, where he began learning the industry from the ground up. He learned about residents, properties, owners, maintenance, and the many moving parts involved in keeping a property running successfully.
He worked his way up to assistant manager and eventually property manager, gaining firsthand experience in the challenges property owners face and the importance of having a team they can depend on.
Real estate became more than a job. It became a passion and a vision for his future. (14 years)
Building Something Bigger
Koty's journey continued into multifamily construction, where he began working with a turnkey construction company specializing in apartment renovations and unit turns. What started as an opportunity to learn and grow became a major accomplishment. Through hard work, persistence, and a commitment to the business, Koty helped build the company into a multimillion-dollar operation.
He was proud of what he had accomplished. But even as his career grew, he never lost sight of the dream that started it all.
He wanted to build something of his own. He wanted to create opportunities, help people build wealth, and establish a business that reflected his values. He wanted a company where relationships mattered as much as results, where people were treated with respect, and where success meant more than numbers on a spreadsheet.
That dream would eventually become Rays Realty Group.
The Greatest Part of the Dream Was Family
In July 2021, Koty married his husband, beginning a new chapter filled with love, partnership, and the promise of the future they would build together. Marriage also brought a beautiful bonus: a daughter who became part of the family Koty had always dreamed of having. For Koty, family had always been about more than a number. It was about love, commitment, showing up for one another, and creating a home where people felt safe, wanted, and supported. Koty and his husband dreamed of growing their family even further. Their journey toward parenthood included exploring IVF, navigating difficult conversations about donations and fundraising, and facing the financial realities of making their dream possible.
Eventually, they made a decision: they would keep working, keep building, and do everything they could to create the future they envisioned. Koty poured himself into real estate, selling homes and working toward the financial goals that would help make their family dreams a reality. Every transaction represented more than a commission. It was another step toward the life they were working so hard to create. And along the way, Koty discovered something important.
He loved real estate. He loved helping people. And he knew he wanted to build his own brokerage and property management company.
From a Personal Dream to a Growing Family
After two years in real estate and countless hours of studying, learning, and preparing, Koty became a real estate broker and opened Rays Realty Group. It was a milestone years in the making. What had once seemed so far away was finally becoming real.
He set out to build a team, grow a portfolio, and create a company that would stand for something bigger than property management alone. And while the business was growing, the family was growing, too. Through their journey, Koty and his husband were blessed with the opportunity to welcome more children into their lives. Their path to building a family led them to foster care, where they opened their hearts and home to children who needed love, stability, and a place to belong.
They have officially adopted three children from foster care, bringing their family to six.
Some people call them the “soccer team.” But to Koty and his husband, they're simply a family, a beautiful, busy, imperfect, loving family that continues to grow through commitment, patience, and love.
Their story is a reminder that the things worth building rarely happen overnight. They take faith in the future, a willingness to work through the hard seasons, and the courage to keep going when the path changes.
For Koty, building a business and building a family have always been connected by the same belief: what you build should mean something, and the people who become part of it should matter.
